Happy new year everyone! Now straight back to work on reviewing retro games until I’ve worked up enough of a back catalogue of the classics or I mean games I want to talk about. So let us review Ratchet & Clank 2 Locked and Loaded. Look I’m gonna call it that because I’m more Australian than hats with corks on them.
The base game is similar to the first one but better including tighter platforming and even crazier guns my personal favourites were the plasma coil, the bouncer and the ryno II. The weapons now incrementally get better well I mean once so that could be improved. The grind railing is not as awkward as the previous games and feels like a rush now instead of a fancy way of getting from point A to B. Now the bad, the hacking mini-games are a chore and more about luck and trial and error rather than skill. The ship sections are very difficult and boring before you unlock the nuke. But the worst space ship level and the worst level is Hrugis Cloud because it’s got a defensive game mechanic but that loses its way when you’ve got no fucking idea where you are in relation to the things you are defending. The space ship sections in the first one worked because you knew where you fucking where. Also the giant clank sequences are slow and drawn out. But those sequences as well as others take place on spherical worlds which is a good idea but ultimately it doesn’t live up to the potential it had going for it.
The music is good but not as memorable as the first one and most of the voice cast returns except Ratchet, which I think, was a good move. I cannot imagine mikey Kelly saying the same lines as james Arnold taylor.
Ratchet & Clank 2 Locked and Loaded made a conscious decision to have better storytelling and dialogue that is more hilarious and they succeeded. The characters are still great like the last one. The game also builds the world or worlds better and make us more aware about where we’re shooting robots.
The menus are simple but effective. However there aren’t enough quick select rings and for a game that touts itself with having so many guns and gadgets most of them sit in the green room while you focus on using five guns.
Ratchet & Clank 2 Locked and Loaded was the first step to the perfection of the series and this game is great. However the game just doesn’t click with me in the same way the third one does. Some of the pieces are missing and small niggles remain which drag down the whole experience. Ratchet & Clank 2 Locked and Loaded gets 4 stars out of five.
